Well Beyond 50

Building Community, Health and Well Being
Through Civic/Social and Creative Engagement

A Program by Seniors (50+), for Seniors

"To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly." - Henri Bergson

Well Beyond 50 will be a traveling troupe of novice and post-professional artists and dancers, ambassadors for healthy aging, intended to inspire others over 50 to move and create.

Well Beyond 50 will lead movement, art, music and writing programs at senior centers, assisted living facilities, and hospitals.

Well Beyond 50 is being formed in response to outcomes from a study conducted by Gene Cohen, M.D., PhD from George Washington University, sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts and five other organizations, validating the importance of creative engagement in later years. The study showed creative engagement in the arts and movement:

  • Reduced medication use
  • Reduced depression and substance abuse
  • Led to better health and decreased pain
  • Produced higher morale
  • Reduced the risk factors associated with long-term care

Additionally:

"The types of leisure activities you pursue affect your brain fitness. Those involved in imaginative or artistic pursuits are healthier."

Gene Cohen M.D., PhD
Center for Aging, Health and the Humanities
George Washington University

"The onset of Alzheimer's disease was delayed for as long as five years among those who were involved in creative groups."
